Earning PDH doesn’t have to interfere with the rest of your work life.
If you’re an architect or an engineer, professional development hours (PDH) come with the territory. Every state licensing board has its own requirements of architects and engineers, and so do professional organizations such as the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
To maintain your license, membership, or both, PDH or continuing education credits are due either yearly or every other year. Every state sets its own requirements. Finding PDH online makes fulfilling those requirements much more convenient, and you have a few different options to think about.
Some Online Providers Specialize Only in PDH
Registered PDH providers, such as PDH Academy, offer courses that are designed to meet the requirements of your state licensing board and professional organization. A course and credits that you might earn aren’t of much help if your licensing board or organization won’t honor them.
For example, our courses are approved and registered with the American Institute of Architects. So you’ll know that when you select Green Roofs [AIAPDH102], you’ll earn 3 hours toward fulfilling your requirement. The same applies to every course that we offer, although some engineering course offerings are different, depending on the state where you’re licensed.

You can find continuing education opportunities without setting foot on a campus.
College or University Courses are Available, but May Be Costly
Just as you earned your degree through a college or university, you can also find some PDH opportunities in that type of setting. Online course offerings can vary, so you might not find a wide range of choices each time you need to fulfill your requirements. You shouldn’t count on a course that you saw last year being available this year.
The tuition or fees for PDH courses may be high through a college or university, so check the fees before you commit to an online learning program. In many cases, you may find that the cost of one PDH course at a university is much more than PDH Academy fees.

Colleagues may also help steer you toward PDH opportunities through your professional organization.
Some Professional Organizations Offer Online Learning Opportunities
If you belong to a professional architect or engineering organization, you may also find online PDH opportunities there. However, some, such as AIA, more often direct members to their registered providers, such as PDH Academy.
Your organization’s website is a good source of information for which courses might be available. And in some cases, you may earn professional development hours for participating in webinars, seminars and conferences hosted by the organization.
Professional development hours keep you at the forefront of your industry. Whether you’re an architect or an engineer, you can expect to spend some time acquiring new skills, learning about new trends, and gaining more knowledge each time you renew your license, membership, or both.
PDH Academy was created to help you find the continuing education courses that you need, and fulfill your annual or bi-annual requirements with the least amount of hassle. Selection is simple. And if you’re an architect, we’ll even report your hours to the AIA on your behalf.
