You’ve got a busy job, so PDH Academy makes continuing education simple.
All professional engineers have continuing education credits that must be earned regularly to keep licensing and education up-to-date. Many states conform to the same course requirements, but the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE) regulations are a bit different. That’s why PDH Academy offers a separate collection of continuing education courses designed to meet the educational needs of engineers in Florida.
Our offerings include many courses and the accompanying final exams, all of which you can order, access, and complete online. Continuing education couldn’t be easier or more convenient!
Whether this is the first time you’ve needed CE courses or you’re a seasoned pro, here’s what you need to know.
Florida Board of Professional Engineers CE Requirements
The Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE) website’s Continuing Education Requirements explains that engineers are required to complete 18 Professional Development Hours (PDH) of continuing education to be able to renew their licenses. Courses must come from a board-approved provider. PDH Academy is just such a provider.
The 18 hours are broken down as follows:
- 1 hour for Florida laws and rules for professional engineers
- 1 hour for Florida ethics
- 4 hours for an area of practice
- 12 hours for any topic of engineering
Because these requirements vary considerably from those for the rest of the country, PDH Academy offers a separate set of engineering course options for Florida residents.
PDH Academy Approved Engineering Course Options
PDH Academy offers 34 course options that meet the Florida Board of Professional Engineers requirements for continuing education. Two are specifically designed to meet the ethics requirement: Ethics for Florida PEs and Ethics in the World of Engineering.
Each of the 34 classes offered ranges in length from 1 to 8 hours with corresponding fees per credit hour. However, we also offer two class bundles that can help you save money. The first is a six-hour bundle that includes Ethics in the World of Engineering (2 hours) and sUAS Aerial Acquisition Data for 3D Modeling (4 hours), and the second is a four-hour bundle that includes Ethics for Florida PEs (1 hour), Laws & Rules for Florida PEs (1 hour), and Florida Building Code 6th Edition: Advanced Course (2 hours).
Continuing Education Course Example
If you’re new to PDH Academy, you may wonder what to expect from our CE courses for Florida residents. Here is an overview of one course, and below you can access a look at what’s on the final exam.
Soil Stabilization for Pavements starts out by introducing the material in purpose, scope, references, definitions, and uses.
Sections of the course cover Selection of Additive, Determination of Stabilizer Content (related to stabilization using Portland cement, lime, lime-fly ash, bitumen, lime-cement and lime-bitumen, and lime treatment of expansive soils), Determination of Stabilizer Content (related to construction using Portland cement, lime, lime-fly ash and lime-cement-fly ash, and bitumen), and finally Quality Control. You can view the materials here.
The final exam for the Soil Stabilization for Pavements course follows a true/false and multiple-choice format. You’ll be asked questions about construction with bitumen, bituminous stabilization, and hot-mix or cold-mix materials. (Fill out the form below to see a copy of the final exam.)
Proof of Fulfillment
For each course you complete with PDH Academy, we provide you with a certificate. The FBPE requires you to keep this proof of work completed through two licensing cycles, or four years. For extra protection, take a picture of each certificate you earn so it will be safe in the cloud and not subject to damage or destruction from fires, floods, or other unfortunate events.
Continuing education shouldn’t be a chore, even if it’s a regular duty to keep your engineering credentials current. The Florida Board of Professional Engineers strives to design guidelines that suit your needs, and PDH Academy works with FBPE to provide courses that fulfill those requirements.
