Description
Course Description
This course is intended to provide an overview of corrosion for professional engineers that have limited knowledge of that subject and certain, closely related topics from metallurgy. However, those persons can often benefit from learning some basic facts in these areas because of the common occurrence of corrosion-caused damage and failures. Civil, mechanical, or aerospace engineers and potentially those in other disciplines could especially find the information useful.
Course Objectives:
- Learn the basic concepts in the electrochemistry of corrosion to allow the engineer to better implement corrosion control methods.
- Gain knowledge of the forms of corrosion and how they differ.
- Understand how various physical and chemical factors that exist in different engineering applications affect corrosion rates.
- Gain knowledge of the four primary methods of mitigating corrosion, i.e. coatings, material selection, cathodic protection, and chemical inhibitors.
