Description
Course Description
The overall objective of this course is to provide a detailed analysis of the various types of spillways and to explain the hydraulics of each type. There is also a discussion of the spillway exit channels and a description of sub-critical, critical, and super-critical flows in these channels. After completing this course, the engineer should have a familiarity with a number of different spillway configurations using a variety of outlet structures.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the concepts of principal spillways & emergency spillways
- Learn how to use various hydraulic equations (including the Weir equation and the orifice equation) to analyze spillway performance
- Learn about the characteristics of spillway exit channels
- Learn about sub-critical and supercritical flows, how to differentiate them, what they mean, and what constitutes a hydraulic jump
