Description
This course provides guidance to architects, engineers and owners to mitigate the effects of hazards resulting from terrorist attacks on new buildings. While focusing primarily on explosive attacks and design strategies to mitigate the effects of explosions, the course also addresses design strategies to mitigate the effects of chemical, biological and radiological attacks. In addition to the applicability to the design of new commercial office, retail, multi-family residential, and light-industrial buildings, many of the concepts presented are also applicable to other building types and/or existing buildings. Based on FEMA’s Primer for Design of Commercial Buildings to Mitigate Terrorist Attacks, 2003.
Course Number: AIAPDH107
Learning Units: 4
AIA Credit Designations: LU/HSW
Learning Objective 1: Upon completion of this course, the student will have a better grasp of the complex trade-offs required when designing security into a building.
Learning Objective 2: The student will know how incremental security measures taken early in design can be more fully developed at a later date as budget allows or as needs change.
Learning Objective 3: The student will understand how security design is a multi-disciplinary approach.
Learning Objective 4: The student will have many design strategies that, when used, will result in enhanced life safety for building occupants in the event of a terrorist attack or other unforeseen catastrophe.
